Sassafras albidum is a host plant for the spicebush swallowtail.
During the Civil War, Harriet Tubman worked for the Union as a cook, nurse, laundress, scout and spy. To make money, she sold homemade pies and root beer.

Root beer was, and still can be, made from the roots of a Sassafras tree.
